Temporary Residence
Temporary Visas
Temporary visa refers to all types of visas that have a limited time of validity.
A temporary visa is required if you intend to stay in Australia temporarily for a holiday, working holiday, study, or if you travel to Australia frequently on business.
Whilst staying temporarily in Australia, you need to have adequate funds to support you and your family, possess your own health insurance and arrive with a good police record.
Screening for entry on a permanent visa is generally more thorough than screening for entry for a temporary visa. This applies particularly to the health checks, Police Clearance and your ability to earn a living, unless you are sponsored on a Family Program visa.
Working provision under a Temporary Visa
Some temporary visas include working provision but many do not. It is essential that you check carefully to see if you are permitted to work on your visa, otherwise you are staying illegally in Australia.
A few examples of Temporary Visas
Electronic Travel Authority Visa for holiday makers
If you wish to journey to Australia for a holiday, you need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authority Visa (ETA visa), prior to travelling to Australia.
As a holiday maker, you only require the ETA visa, passport and spending money. There is little procedure or examination of documents.
If you are intending to travel and work in Australia as a Working Holiday Maker, you will require an Australian Working Holiday Visa.
Working Holiday Visa
If you are a citizen of the United Kingdom (UK), the Republic of Ireland, Germany, Canada, Malta, Japan, the Netherlands or the Republic of Korea and you are aged between 18 and 30 years, you may be eligible for a Working Holiday Visa. This visa permits you to remain in Australia for one year and work full time while travelling.
Visitor Visa
This type of visa does not permit you to work in Australia, but you may be allowed to attend short study courses and seminars. The Visitor Visa is for people wishing to come to Australia for a short visit or holiday, to meet family in Australia or undergo medical treatment.
Student Visa
If you live overseas and you wish to study at an Australian educational establishment you will need to apply for a Student Visa. This type of visa may include limited work rights, but you need to check the regulations carefully upon application.
Multiple Entry Short Stay Business Visa
If you are a business person who regularly visits Australia on business, Multiple Entry Short Stay Business Visa may be ideal for your purposes. This visa will allow you to carry out business activities in Australia, providing you don't accept a full-time position with an Australian business which could otherwise be filled by an Australian resident.
Business Sponsorship
Australian companies may sponsor employees on a temporary residence visa lasting up to 4 years.
It is important to note that employees must apply for permission from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) before changing position or employer while they are in Australia.
Independent Executive Visas
If you wish to come to Australia to establish a business, you may be eligible for an Independent Executive visa. This visa allows you to remain in Australia for 4 years and later become a permanent resident through the established business category.
